Bush Edits Jefferson
Bush quoted Thomas Jefferson at his July 4th speech at Monticello, Jefferson's home, but he didn't quote it in full. He cut out the part about how "the chains that bound men" were put there by "monkish ignorance and superstition." Things that make you go hmmm.

McCain Campaign Concedes That Obama Is A Patriotic American
McCain adviser Charlie Black said yesterday, "We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character."

I believe Black is using "concede" in its meaning "to acknowledge to be true," as if this was somehow ever up for debate. It's things like this that make me realize just how bugfrack insane our politics must appear to Europeans. Is there an EU politician, a man who has ascended to the highest levels of the game in his country, who must still and continually defend his love for his own soil the way we make politicians in our country?

The Stimulus Was For Porn!
"In a June 15, 2008 survey to our members, thirty two percent of respondents referenced the recent stimulus package as part of their decision to either become a new member," of one or more porn sites. Somehow, I don't think this is the "stimulus" the Bush Administration had in mind.

Hilzoy on Helms' Hagiography
Hilzoy points out that the current line of blather from Fox, et al, that "Jesse Helms is a brilliant exemplar of the American conservative movement," would have been regarded as an unfair smear of the right just a week earlier.

She then goes on to quote dozens of modern conservatives on what was so great about Jesse Helms.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I spent mine on high end sex toys. That's a form of stimulus package, you know...

Re: Stimulus

It's been long established that when times are bad, people will spend less money on everything except entertainment. Entertainment is often the only escape, and explains why musicals were so popular in the 30s. The more escapist the entertainment, the better. :)
