My Beautiful Mommy
Okay, I'm squicked. This is a new children's book that attempts to explain to young kids why Mommy seems to be sick and has bandages after her trip to the doctor's for a breast lift and tummy tuck, a package deal known as "the mommy makeover." (via Boing Boing)

Hilary was for elitism before she was agin' it.
This has to be one of the few times in U.S. political history when a multi-millionaire has accused a much less wealthy fellow public servant, a person of the same party and views who made much less lucrative career choices, of "elitism"!
You know what really annoys me about this issue? I want an elite wonk in the White House. Just like, I want an elite physician, not a mundane one; I want an elite CPA, not a run-of-the-mill accountant. We don't go to sports events to watch ordinary guys, but elite athletes. I've had enough of "the guy I'd want to drink beer with."

Real People Don't Have Time for Social Media
According to this, I'm almost a "content provider."

Arch is delightful.
And of course there's the unofficial iMac Girl (http://www.hackcanada.com/cyb0rg/asm/apple/iMacGirl800x600.jpg), who I still adore.

Elite (on merit), yes. Elite (being born and raised to power and privilege), not unless they're elite on merit. Elitist (i.e., believing some people are intrinsically better than most and there's no reason to try to do right by "most"), no.

The nice folks at Making Light posted a debunking of the "My Beautiful Mommy" debacle (http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010154.html). In brief: It's a vanity press book, without even an ISBN. If it hadn't been picked up as a puff-piece by a major newsweekly, nobody would have ever heard of it.

(Which isn't to say that I didn't twitch and cringe when I first saw it - but I found it comforting to know that we will not be seeing it at Elliot Bay this year, or any year.)

I'm just glad to have one less sign of social ruin weighing on my conscience.

Yeah, those children are okay. I think I'd like to see similar "icons" done in the style of "girl genius"...

Shouldn't the Fedora girl be wearing a fedora?

I have to say that I really like Ubuntu's orange-on-brown!

<3 Thanks for sharing the Linux Distro girls... SO CUTE!

Ah my tried and true Slackware, how I loved thee. That reminds me, I need to see if there's a new version... And omg they are all cute, but I like Suse, Slackware, Ubuntu, and Arch best. ^___^

Well, they seem to have bought an ISBN in the meantime, and hey, this is press. They can't complain.

Oh, it's great for them. As the saying goes, bad publicity is better than no publicity - at this point, they've got national coverage without spending a dime on it. Outrage sells.

Now, I need to go wash out the sour taste the book leaves in my mouth.
