It is a truism of American life that we know two mutually incompatible things: that power corrupts without pause or regard, and that if we just find the right man, the incorruptible man, then we can put him into power and he'll put things right. Conservative are more likely to give lip service to the first and yet often succumb to the last; liberals, on the other hand, often seem to yearn for the last and yet seem to guard against the first more consistently.

Which is why the fall of Elliot Spitzer is so strangely delightful. My gods, you do not make your career and become governor by touting your law-and-order record of busting corrupt politicians and high-priced prostitution rings, only to toss it away with Nixonian list-making and finally get caught paying for a high-priced call-girl!

[Sweet! Gawker has pictures of the call-girl stable!]

Indeed. Not a word in my spell checker, apparently. "Schadenfreude." There! Now it is.

Look at what a person denounces most to see what their own weakness is.

Which, of course, makes one wiggle and squirm, but be every educational when used as a self-diagnostic.

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure he's guilty as sin. But isn't it just really unfortunate that one of the very few people who has been very publicly on the case of the massive, overweening fraud in the finance, ratings, and monoline insurance businesses - the very one who got Warren Buffet to set up a new monoline insurer that's actually sound so that future muni and state bonds could be issued less impaired - gets taken out right as the crises spawned by the clusterfuck of all this fraud really starts to hit? And as the ratings agencies turn to pure fraud to pretend the existing monolines have value? And as everyone is looking for some sort of way out that doesn't actually involve taking any of these actual losses, and people are talking massive, and I mean massive, government bailouts?

Isn't that timing just wretched?

G*d, what a waste!

Why do the ones with so much promise, who should know better, who do know better, always undermine themselves with stupid sh1t like this?

I live in NYS. I liked Elliot Spitzer. I really had hopes that he'd slowly and methodically clean up the mess that's Albany. Instead, he's dropped a great, big, steaming load of his own. :grumble:

True, which makes it all the more disappointing. What, Elliot, you didn't think that the moneymonkeys on Wall St. that you were reigning in would notice?!?!?!? That they wouldn't come after you with whatever they could dig up on you? What, you had to go and hand them something??!?!?!

I'm disappointed. I had higher hopes for the man, I even voted for him. I almost understand why he chose to pay for 'companionship', 21 years of the same, albeit reasonably attractive, woman could get a bit dull, he's only human, after all. But he's not setting a very good example for his daughters.

It's a shame to see Roger Stone win one.

You probably don't have 'epicaricacy' in your spell checker, either; that's the English equivalent.
