Enlightment DR17: Almost ready
Feb. 11th, 2008 12:28 pmI upgraded this weekend to my window manager of choice, Enlightment DR17. I've been running 16 more or less since the beginning of time and decided that it was time to take the plunge. DR17 is about as Aqua as Linux can get; it's just sheer beautiful eyecandy. The toolbar at the bottom is massively improved, as is the screen-flip and drop-shadow effects.
There was one near-showstopper. When you change to a different window, the manager puts up a "you are here" message that took a full second to fade away. I ended up digging through the source code to find the delay's name in the configuration file, then setting it all the way down to zero. Half the time I flip screens it's to look up something (hello, I don't need this thing in my way) or to write something (I don't need this thing grabbing my keyboard and mouse). Making it go away shouldn't have required developer expertise.
I also installed the bling module, which gives you transparency and composition in your screens. Unfortunately, it does not play well with stacked fullscreens, and I tend to stack my browser, mail client, and newsreader in one screen to keep them out of the way. The last loaded program rendered well, but the others would not come out of their transparency setting, looking ghostly on top of the one the compositor "thought" belonged on top. Annoying. So I disabled bling.
It is otherwise pretty. I'm especially found of the theme "23 Oz.", but it has a really annoying animation, so I canned it as well. *Sigh* I'm just too picky about these things.
