After my doctor's appointment on Friday, I had a little time before heading home and stopped by Border's Books. I have long wanted a copy of The Baker's Apprentice, so I picked it out, sat down at the cafe' in the store, and started to leaf through it. I held the book carefully so as not to crack the spine, and the cover was clearly visible to anyone walking by.

Twice in the space of half an hour, I had two women come up to me and start a conversation with, "Oh, I love the smell of baking bread." The first was cursory; maybe she saw my wedding ring or something. The second, a cute girl, 20-something with brown hair past her shoulders and red, librarian-fetish glasses, stayed long enough that I could probably have asked for her phone number, ring or no. We talked almost entirely about making bread: about cheap curing baskets and how to fake a couche (doesn't that just sound dirty in French?) and the different kinds of bread we liked. Eventually, I had to excuse myself and actually buy the book, and she smiled at me it a funny, sad kind of way as I left.
