It has been a quiet three days here at the Villa Sternberg. "Quiet" meaning that no crises have arisen, not that we've been relaxed. Oh, no, not at all.
It all started Friday, when it took me 45 minutes to travel 1.5 miles from my office to a haircut. I got a summer cut, short and boyish. I like it. I also stopped byToys in Babeland a block from Pandemos for non-latex supplies, then I had to hurtle back down home to take Yamaraashi-chan out to a dinner date with her older sisters, then head home for dinner of my own. We did take out, and the restaurant got the order wrong, so I had to drive to King-Wha twice, by which time I'd had more than enough ass time with my car.
I did manage to get Half Life Two: Episode One running under Linux, but the demands of the graphic engine outstrip the Linux HAL3D drivers by a mile and things moving quickly just don't render correctly at all. It's very annoying.
Saturday, let's see. Kouryou-chan had dance class at 11:15, Yamaraashi-chan had an end-of-year choir event at 12:00. Between those two events, we stopped by Barnes & Noble so Yamaraashi-chan could pick up a gift for her friend, since she had a slumber birthday party that afternoon. I bought a copy of Accelerando. I'd already read the free E-book copy, but a friend of mine has to read this book and he's not the e-book type, and I don't object to giving money to Charlie. We picked up Kouryou-chan at 12:00, then Yamaraashi-chan at the choir thing around 12:10, then back to Kouryou-chan's dance studio for the annual "open house," where they fed us lunch and I got to meet many of the other parents. I also wandered across the street to a second-hand store and found an exact copy of my home keyboard, the Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro. It was filthy, but I ran it through the dishwasher, and it's all nice and great now.
While this was happening, I got a call from work! A bug bad enough to block a release candidate had been found! We picked up Yamaraashi-chan from her choir thing, then I took the whole family back to the house. I hurtled into the office, identified the bug (bad DOM identifier hidden by the Firefox "bubble up" behavior, but failing in the IE "trickle down" model), and hurtled back home, total time 75 minutes. Then it was time to take Yamaraashi-chan to her slumber party.
On the way home, we stopped by the local sundries store, a Fred Meyers, and bought some necessities... socks and underwear!
I'm so glad I had a date that night. Something quiet and relaxing. The best things in life are free... like willow branches! I didn't get home until nearly 1:30 in the morning. Now that's a date.
Hey, it's father's day. My girls gave me lovely hand-made cards that I really liked.
We went bowling to celebrate the day, so I spent two hours with my family tossing large, heavy balls at wooden pins than never deserved the cruelty we inflicted upon them. Both Omaha and I commisserated on getting older, on the aches and pains and the need for lighter balls, and on having to hold the menu out here to read the fine print, and all that.
They also took me to the Keg for dinner, where I had horseradish, er, I mean, prime rib with horseradish, and a salad wedge of iceberg lettuce with blue cheese on it. Yummy.
Anyway, I need to go fix some plumbing and clean up the kitchen, get the kids to bed, and get ready for sleep myself.
