Abraham Maslow's "hierarchy of needs" is the same kind of theory. He asserts that all human needs are naturally arranged in a sequence that is always rigidly observed-- physiological requirements before personal safety, for example, and only once these are achieved will a person go on to seek love, esteem, understanding, etc.

But this is nonsense, of course, because humans can think and act on these "higher" needs even while they are cold, wet, and hungry.
