But where's the surprise ending?

I finally had some time this weekend to sit down and write, and so I found myself a nice cafe, took a full battery on the laptop, and wrote about five thousand words. When I was done I realized that about three thousand would need to be thrown away because they were just "for me," stuff that I needed to know about the characters before I could write their story, and the rest, well, there wasn't quite the resonance for which I was looking.

This morning, I awoke with a realization. I was writing a subplot. It's a nice story, but it doesn't stand alone on its own: it would make a great counterpoint to some major plot, a nice minor drama with romantic overtones, a sense of belonging and a happy ending to offset some major, tragic conflict with betrayal of trust and justice as themes.

Now, if only I knew what that main plot was.
