One of the things that I did while in Shanghai was help a Japanese businessman use the lift (it was a strange smart card setup). I knew very little Japanese (I was in my 3rd month), but I was able to help him. I know about the fear of interacting, and it sucks, because you have the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" problem afterwards.
