Steamboy review
Apr. 7th, 2005 06:53 pmSo, after work yesterday I had agreed to meet up with
fallenpegasus and go see Steamboy. He kept telling me it was in the Varsity on Capitol Hill, so I caught a bus to the hill and stopped by The Egyptian Theatre, another in the chain of small art theatres in the area, and sure enough, the Varsity was in the Universe District. When Pegasus pulled by I pointed out that we were in the wrong district, so we drove over to the U. We still had two hours to kill, so I grabbed a Gyro sandwich and we trolled through bookstores looking for a book Omaha wanted.
The movie was... disappointing. If it had a theme, it got lost in the ending. It starts out pretty enough and well-paced and somewhere along the way the director decided it needed to be bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger!, resulting in a huge bombastic collection of high points that never seems to end. The hero character never really develops any growth; nor does the female character off of whom he's supposed to play. The machine visuals are so huge and overblown that they make the humans seem blocky and poorly animated.
I mean, I liked it, but I wouldn't collect it or anything like that. There was just so much to this movie that they left lying on the floor, like the Victorian submarine and the primitive mecha, with which they never did anything.
