Good news and bad

Well, if that song title isn't the launching point for a story, I don't know one that is.

There was a good word at work today. One of my co-workers had flown to India to visit his family, who live in a coastal town right in the path of the tsunami. Fortunately, his family lives in a new suburb somewhat inland, and he and his are all right. The people who lived on the water's edge are not, but there is a big relief effort underway in his district.

On the other hand, who do you know would steal dental floss? At least twice, the dental floss I keep in my desk has disappeared. This morning, I had an apple for breakfast and I needed the floss afterwards and there was none. How annoying. I also seem to have left my emergency pair of nail clippers at home.

You could find out who is stealing your floss. Simply take a picture running the floss through something gross and then winding it back into the package. Then when it gets stolen again, post the picture. The person who reacts strongly is your thief.

Hope this doesn't elicit too many "eeww gross" comments, but I've been stuck at the office with something truly painful jammed between my teeth and no floss in sight. Necessity is a mother, so here's what I devised:

Find a sheet of plastic: sandwich bag, trash bag, grocery bag, anything. Cut out a 1-inch wide strip of the stuff. Now stretch it. Plastic has that strange property that it will get thinner but, also stronger, and not break. Stop stretching when you have a filament thin enough for flossing.

It’s not as good as the real thing, but a great relief if you really need some floss.
