Sad and dreary, moving day...
Nov. 6th, 2004 08:29 pmThis morning, after getting the protoplasm dressed and out the door, the three of us headed over to our favorite donut shop to pick up a bagfull and head over to
lisakit's old place to help her move out.
The drive was uneventful, but the last mile was spent in stop-and-go traffic of the most terrible sort. "Incident: All lanes closed," said the banner far in the distance. We sat in the car and waited for the indications to change. A long-haul trucker was kind enough to pull into the shoulder and prevent the horde of SUVs that were taking advantage of the situation. At an intersection prior to the accident, people were actually going up the on-ramp in an attempt to escape the parking lot that I-405 had become.
And then Omaha and I saw the most amazing thing. Wheeling out of the sky, no more than ten cars in front of us, was this black mass, with wings or petals, like a gigantic leaf, falling and falling down to the pavement. Whatever it was, it actually fell all the way to the ground right in front of a car, and then out of the traffic erupted two bald eagles, one chasing the other up the highway. They were thin and young-looking things, but it was still quite a sight.
We got to Lisa's and I couldn't help but feel sad the entire time. That's twice in one year I've had to help people get out of the homes they had made and find... someplace else. Lisa at least had a refuge, but more than half her life was being put into storage and left in boxes. A lot of other people showed up:
tabbifli and Alex,
elfric,
taxqueen and Elfric's spawn,
wolfieboy, and a bunch of other people whos names I've now blanked on.
We did eventually get every car and van packed full of her stuff, then headed over to the storage place, where everything was stacked and piled and compiled and eventually put away. Then we went over to where she's staying now, renting space from a friend while she tries to get her finances and her life back in order. Kouryou-chan was a wonder most of the time, staying out of the way and helping move boxes of light things from the house to the car or the car to the storage.
It's odd. I got a full 8½ hours of sleep last night, but I still felt like going straight to a nap the second I got home. Omaha and I lazed about for a while. We had chicken cordon bleu, rice and steamed green beans. I watched a couple episodes of DearS, which is turning out to be better than I had thought. Haven't gamed or anything like that recently.
