This morning I woke up and contemplated riding my bicycle. I decided against it because I still don't have a riding backpack that I can use-- Omaha stole my old blue one (which, admittedly, she rescued from an early death with some fine stitching on a blown seam) and the older brown one is probably not salvageable. Anyone got an old backpack hiding in a closet somewhere with which they'd be willing to part? I have to remember to assemble my riding clothes more readily.

I rose up this morning to dawn light and waking songbirds. I love mornings like this, when the weather is fine and the air clear. I made coffee and got dressed, tested a transcoding operation I ran last night (didn't work, oh well, try again) and then headed out through the back gate and into the woods. The path is short, only about a hundred yards, but it's so nice to walk through that and then down a short hill into civilization of a sorts.

Given gas prices you'd hope more people rode the bus, but today the numbers were down. None of the usual people were there: cadaver girl, bad dentures woman, ramrod civil servant, white punk off dope, were all missing. Gads, I have terrible names for my fellow bus riders, don't I? I wonder what they think of me. "Laptop boy" probably.

I got off at the Seattle art museum and walked the length of Pike Place Market, buying a bagel fresh from the street-level bakery and a grapefruit from the grocer across the cobblestones wet with the morning washdown; barely open and already doing business, long before the touristas get there, depending on the locals. Fairer to us too, I bet. Samantha, the girl who runs the corner grocery stand, seemed in high spirits this morning. Breakfast, two bucks and absolutely delicious.

Dunno what's going down but this morning I seem... happier. Cheerful. Maybe it's just the weather. Maybe it's just the progress being made. Not on my writing, sadly; I haven't had an original thought in days. That's just the stress talking. Maybe I'll tell you why someday.

Screw it. I bussed all the way into work, spent four hours hacking the hardware display, and I'm going home. It's too nice a day. I'll make up the lost hours Sunday, when it's supposed to be gray and rainy.
