Sundays with moss...
Apr. 19th, 2004 10:56 amWhen we gave the girls a bath Saturday night, Omaha taught Yamaarashi-chan how to use a nylon scrub sponge with the liquid children's soap. Kouryou-chan naturally had to use it too. They both agreed it was nifty. "What's next?" I asked Omaha. "Lessons about moisturizer and pedicures?" Given the amount of sun we're suddenly getting (in Seattle?), a moisturizing sunscreen is probably not a bad idea, and both of them needed their finger- and toe-nails cut anyway.
So, Sunday comes around. This time, Omaha and I actually rise before the girls, although soon after we're awake the two of them come hurtling down and demand snuggles and breakfast. After giving them their morning hugs and sending them off to get dressed, Omaha and I make them breakfast: peanut butter and bananas on English muffins. Kouryou-chan had wanted that yesterday but we were out of bananas. Then we shuffled them out the door and into the backyard.
After doing the last batch of laundry (the girls were amazingly helpful, folding clothes and putting away towels all by themselves), Omaha and I spent most of the day outside. Omaha thatched the front lawn, which has been attacked by moss, while I scrubbed about half the upper roof deck, north-facing, which doesn't get a lot of sun. It was a day for sunscreen, and I still feel like I got quite a bit of radiation. For lunch I fed the girls egg-salad sandwiches-- they love being able to peel and mash their own eggs. Yamaarashi-chan insisted (insisted) on emulating her father's own bad example and cracking her egg on her forehead. Kouryou-chan thought we were silly and used the bowl.
Unfortunately, we had a bit of an altercation. Kouryou-chan started tossing sand at Yamaarashi-chan, and Yamaarshi-chan turned to get away, tripped, fell, and got a splinter in her hand. She was very brave while we extracted it, but it was pretty deep in and she cried a bit. Kouryou-chan was confined to her room for 20 minutes, and then told to come out and apologize to Yamaarashi-chan. Then they want back to playing together.
I played a couple of rounds of Sequence with the girls, and then watched two episodes of the new Nickelodeon show, I was a Teenage Robot. Despite my initial reaction over the "Jenny's Sisters" episode, the "Football" episode was rather weak. And they episodes are only 11 minutes long. Here's hoping there are better ones coming.
Afterwards, we headed over to a salon and got Yamaarashi-chan's hair cut, then drove her home. She was surprisingly upset when she learned that she wouldn't be having dinner with us Sunday night; we almost always take her back before dinnertime on Sunday.
Omaha, Kouryou-chan, and I caught up with
fallenpegasus, who was tooling around Seattle, and we ate dinner at what used to be Neelam's and is now called "The Jewel of India" (how original!). The food was good, but I do miss Miss Neelam's touch on the place; she was always so personable and friendly. She knew the neighborhood.
When we got home, we were all exhausted. I put Kouryou-chan straight to bed, and Omaha and I were out soon thereafter.
