Weekend listing.
Oct. 12th, 2003 08:51 pmI wanted to leave work around 3:30pm, since I'd gotten in early, but just as I was starting to pack up, my mananger asked me and
kendaer if we were available to discuss a new hardware arrangement. Great. It took an hour, by which time it was too late for me to hit the University Engineering Library, which had been my afternoon destination. I wanted to get a pair of rather esoteric papers, one on keyboard biometrics for real-time operating systems and another on text type identification for database assignment. No such luck. I also wanted to get the last book on Gnome/GTK+ development, but again no bliss. All copies were sold out. The University bookstore had sadly halved their computer section, now that the dot-com boom was over.
I wandered over to Mercer Island to meet my date for the evening, a lovely woman who, like my family, has spent the entire summer in parent mode. I sat in a Starbucks while I waited for the time of our date to roll around and read through a fantrans of some very silly manga. The woman behind the counter was quite helpful in letting me find where my date and I were meeting.
We went out to Neelam's restaurant to share in a comforting dinner in a nice and quiet atmosphere. Preferable to the sushi place I had orginally considered which had a reputation for being a bit nosy. Then we wandered over to the Wetspot, where two friends of mine were hosting for the evening.
I have to admit that EC's are quite... different from anything I would have expected. They're mellower, but there seems to be a lot more distance between people than I expected. Maybe it's a different crowd from the one I've seen at more active nights, like the standard Pan parties or the Grind. When we were done, we were quite exhausted (grin).
I awoke the next day and was startlingly grumpy, despite getting eight and a half hours of sleep. I just wanted to laze around all day, but we had obligations to run about and do stuff. We did the monthly Costco run, buying surprisingly little in the process, and then Kouryou-chan and I sat around and drew quite a bit. I mananged to find a beautiful pen, a tachikawa brand that absolutely sucks for writing but as a drawing pen was just amazing. It's a fountain pen that draws the most crisp and clean lines I've ever seen. Unfortunately, it's rather hard to get refills for, so I'll probably be suffering until I find a cartridge supplier when this one dies.
After a while, during which
omaha and Kouryou-chan made an absolutely delicious pumpkin pie and
kendaer came over, we headed over to
j5nn5r's house to celebrate his birthday. My general grumpiness and malaiase was not easily dispelled, even when present among such loveliness as Omaha, Desirae, and
damiana_swan. I really must learn a little self-discipline. Usually, I managed my nutrition by not having too many temptations in the house, but when I'm at a party I tend to eat just a wee bit too much. Oogle. My demophobia (dislike of crowds) was pretty strong, too, especially when there were something like ten people in a tiny hot tub and they tried to encourage me to join them. No thanks.
Kouryou-chan passed out in my lap just seconds after insisting "I'm not tired!" She was already in her pyjammies, so that wasn't such a problem; I just laid her on the couch and covered her with a blanket. I did finally get out to the hot tub when I only had to share it with four other people.
I went home with Kouryou-chan; Omaha was spending the night with a friend. Despite it being so late, I couldn't get sleep. I also couldn't think straight-- the perfect time to hack code! I actually ended up writing some blender code, which was fun. I'm never gonna be good at that, but it's interesting to see how it works.
I woke up this morning about ten and made Kouryou-chan and myself pancakes. I wish I'd thought earlier to put together an overnight batch of oats in the crock pot; then I could have them ready for breakfast. But the pancackes were delicious, and I made just enough for the two of us. I let the batter sit for five minutes before cooking the first batch, which was suggested by someone the last time I mentioned it, and that really helped to make them fluffy. Omaha returned shortly after I'd cleaned up the kitchen and started the weekly chore of changing the bedsheets.
It's been a quiet day otherwise. We watched some TV (Iron Chef, MI-5), dug out in the yard when there was a sun break (and Kouryou-chan made such a mess of herself with the mud puddles), played Scrabble Junior with Kouryou-chan, and did the weekly grocery shopping. One of Kouryou-chan's "dress up" costumes that we picked up from a thrift store tore in one arm, and I got out the needle and thread and sewed it up, and she was so happy. Omaha made an absolutely scrumptious wild rice and butternut squash risotto for dinner that had this savory, slightly salty flavor because of the grassy rice shells. Magnificent.
I'm trying to pinpoint when, exactly, I stopped caring so much about having sex. It's not that I have any inclination to give it up or anything like that, but it's become a whole lot less important to me. I don't think I'm depressed or anything like that, and as much as I have enjoyed the company of friends this week and will probably do so for a while, it's just that I'm not really looking the way I used to. I kinda wish I knew why. I mean, I should have been letching at Desirae and Damiana Swan. It just wouldn't turn on. It was kinda frustrating.
