Yesterday, the family went to the local water park to spend the hot summer day someplace cooler than my office space, which peaked at a brutal 93F Monday morning.
As we were standing in line at the top of one of the slides, these three young men, early 20s, were standing behind me. One was very dark-skinned, another middling, the third was that "no amount of sunscreen is gonna save you" white. They were playing the typical status games, not really meaning it, just joshing with each other. Clearly they were all solid friends.
At one point, the light-brown-skinned guy said, "Took the double again? What happened to you two last time? Did you stop halfway down to make out or something?"
The other two laughed, but there was neither rancor nor embarrassement in their reaction. They were just having fun. There was no suggestion that making out was wrong, it just wasn't necessarily for them. At worst, it had a hipster's ironic detachment from the fact that someone, somewhere (but not even here) would be weirded out by it.
If that's the best we can do at the moment, it's good enough. I'll take it over anything worse.
