One of the things that's always amused me is the narrative of the Pimsleur Language Set. I've now listened to the "free" sampler versions (the first 8 episodes) for Japanese, French, Spanish, Russian, and Italian, gone through the whole set for Japanese, and checked out the French set from the local library.

In all of these, the "narrative" of the first eight episodes is always the same: you learn how to say, from a male point of view, "I'm an American. I am not from [nation of language origin]. The weather is pretty good today. Would you like to go to dinner with me? How about drinks? Beer or wine?" The sexual tension is high. You have to get the full set to know what happens!

So here's the spoiler: Episode 9, however, the first one you have to pay for (if your library isn't helpful), always ends the same way: "No, sir. I do not want to have a drink with you!" "How about dinner? Eight O'clock? There's a good restaurant down the street." "You're not understanding me. Absolutely not!"

So there you have it. You don't get meta-laid. Feel better now?
