Hard drive in "pre-fail": Damn
Oct. 3rd, 2010 08:12 amWell, my hard drive has started this disturbing "bonk" sound while it's idling. It's very disturbing, and every attribute on the drive's SMART data shows that it's either way past its recommended age of replacement, or that its use rate is statistically far past that of a drive's mean time between failures.
On the other hand, it passes internal testing; it says it's unlikely to fail anytime soon. But that faint, intermittent 'bonk' sound from inside the chassis tells me maybe I ought to go get another one. Good thing I do weekly backups.
