ROFL!

A while ago, I blogged about Mari-Tan, a painfully cute little Japanese "How to speak English" book, the premise of which was that the dialogue came entirely from the movie Full Metal Jacket.

I'm glad somebody saw the comedy value of this, because if you can find it look up the comic Girl with the Reckless Tongue, which takes this to its logical conclusion: what if someone from Japan actually learned most of their English from Mari-Tan? It's a short one-shot doujin-- and hentai-- in which the two rivals, one cocky and one wimpy, attempt to date a girl who speaks entirely in Marine Sergeant, and of course the wimpy one wins because he's used to such language and it's no blow to his ego as long as he's getting laid by the prettiest girl on campus.

Biohazard Truck
Huh. I'm starting to wonder if I have an eye for this sort of thing. This morning, I get an email from Seed magazine, the people who own Scienceblogs.com, among other things. The writer tells me that they want to use this photo, of the biohazard truck, for an article in a series they're doing about anthrax. The photo was CC'd, but they wanted to get my okay and agreed to a linkback to my pro blog.

Intentionally Left Bank
Then, a graphic designer working for the bank for which this billboard is advertising, emails me. He says that this is one of the best photos he's seen yet of his own work, and could he please get a copy of the original to post to their website touting the success of this campaign? I agreed, again with attribution.

Huh. One day, I'll be able to afford a better camera.

Omaha and I are indulging in a little television. A long time ago we started watching HBO's Rome, but we cut our subscription before the series ended. I now have Season 1 on DVD, and we've been catching up.

Man, I'd forgotten how nasty some of the characters were. Like Atia Julii, the evil temptress who uses money and sex to make life miserable for everyone around her, especially her own son. She does have the best lines, though. When asked why she's sending a particular slave to a female rival as a gift, she explains "Big penis is always welcome!" We get a full-frontal, slow-pan of the camera along the body to show what she means and, oh my god, that was impressive.

Omaha and I noticed that they don't ride the horses correctly. Rome didn't have stirrups. And while they got the soldier's backpack supports correct, the load is slightly wrong. Probably because they didn't want to kill that many pigs: each soldier carried several pounds of smoked pork with them.
