As we must all be aware, there was an earthquake in Pakistan a few days ago, and rescue efforts are underway. At one refugee camp a food shipment had just arrived and the rescue workers had started unpacking and preparing the food. It takes time to cook for 1,200 people. But the local mullah threatened to burn down the camp kitchen if they didn't stop immediately. His reason? "Don't you know it is Ramadan? You cannot cook during the day! It is just not permitted!"

I wrote a good 1100 words today and I think I'll be ready to pass this thing and get on with my life. It's one of those stories that just never seems to get close to finishing, but on the other hand I need to finish it before I'm allowing myself anything else.

I also had a good idea for a long story. I was thinking about doing a sequel to Bloody Beth, but the ideas I kept having just didn't jibe with her setting: I wanted to write 15th century pirate stories again, but I wanted it to have a horror setting: zombies and tentacle monsters and viscous, oily fogs through which men can only see the shadows they become when they pass from this life... and all that.

I'm working on it.
