Wobbly Weekend...
May. 15th, 2005 07:09 pmIt has been a busy weekend here at Villa Sternberg. Friday night
fallenpegasus came over for our somewhat regular fish dinner; we grilled pepper-crusted halibut over mesquite out on the porch, which is the nigh-quintessential summer dinner here in Seattle. (To be truly quintessential, one would have to have salmon and asparagus, both native products, but we had broccoli.) We opened one of the bottles of wine that Omaha had got me for my birthday, a wonderful high-end from Chateau St. Michele, the 2000 Meritage. It was hot and peppery, not at all busy but very delicious. However, when paired with the peppers on the fish, it turned out to be sweet and wonderful and as a birthday gift it was quite ideal. After Omaha put the girls to bed we watched MST3K: Prince Of Space, which had such classic lines as "I have no superpowers but I skip reasonably well" and "Mince, mince, mince, mince!"
Saturday, after a breakfast of pancakes, we got down to the serious business of going to Kouryou-chan's school and pulling up lots and lots of weeds. Our own lawn needs the same treatment and we were going to do it Sunday until the weather went sour on us, but for Saturday it was work, work, work under a questionable sky that threatened to pour and never quite made good.
When we got home, I wanted lasagne for dinner. It's noodles and sauce and macaroni and cheese all in one, right? The kids wouldn't eat it. I kinda messed up; I missed the salt in the sauce, so it was kinda bland. Oh, well.
A friend of mine had called and it was kinda a spur-of-the-moment thing that we arranged to get together last night and go out. I felt guilty about leaving Omaha with the girls, but she assured me she would be fine. So out I went, to the Wetspot, where we had a wonderful time doing all kinds of messy things, went back to her place and did more messy things, and I made it home around 2:00am. Suffice it to say that the activity was sufficiently energetic that I had trouble operating the clutch on the way home. Bless Omaha and the girls for letting me sleep until nine this morning.
I scrambled eggs for breakfast but the girls wanted cereal. It was a housecleaning day: floors to mop, laundry to fold, and the big job of the week: the Spring clean of the refrigerator. Putting on Weird Al's apropriate Living in the Fridge, Omaha and I set to work as a team, one pulling stuff from the 'fridge and the other storing it, then one washing while the other dries, then one re-assembling the 'fridge while the other stocked. I also got under the thing where the condenser coils hide and slaughtered an entire civilization of dustbunnies with my trusty vacuum cleaner.
Haven't seen any ants recently. I know they're planning something.
The girls occupied themselves on this rainy Sunday afternoon: impromptu theatrics, dress-up, a computer game or two, even a book to read.
