Sunday was the first day in three where I didn't have anything scheduled. It was also the first time in a long time that a good story idea hit me, so I wrote a few prelims for it. We rose late and had leftover pancakes and waffles, cereal and milk. It was that kind of morning. Nobody felt much like cooking. Kouryou-chan made a mess of herself, but she's good at that and I didn't mind at all.

After breakfast, we caught up on the world and then went out shopping for a few things. Along the way we found a garage sale that was selling a computer. For a hundred bucks, we went home with a 1.1GhZ P3 w/512Mb, 12Gb HD, network card, video card, modem. It looks like a frankenbuild in a HP case, but hey, it'll keep the kids in computers for the next two to three years at least. We also found four deck chairs, plastic, a bit dirty but otherwise functional, for three bucks apiece. Now all I need is a warm, sunny day to clean them.

We also went to an "estate sale," a garage sale for the dead. The house had a beautiful view of Normandy lake, a small but well-manicured yard, a swimming pool turning green with neglect, and an air of wood paneling and carpeting bought in the early 1970's. There was a dingy tinge to everything, a haze that clung to the fourteen sets of dishes, the hundred-plus coffee mugs, the six or seven sets of cookware, the hundreds of shoes and belts and belt buckles. I wanted to make some kind of snide comment, but I restrained myself, thinking that someday people might be picking over my stuff and saying the same things. Her husband, who had apparently preceded her by only a few months, had left a beautiful 1956 Mark II in the garage. The property was selling for $800,000, but Omaha felt it was worth barely five since the house would have to be torn down and rebuilt to modern standards. The executor was someone with whom I ride the bus; Kouryou-chan told her the story of how she lost her two front teeth.

We got home and had grilled cheese sandwiches, watched a half-hour of TV, updated my financials, and then I set to work doing a programming job for Omaha's company, which took about an hour. Kouryou-chan lay on the floor, reading a book called Prince Cinders, a funny take on the Cinderella story. I cleaned both upstairs bathrooms, which took a while, and then Omaha and I made dinner-- ravioli and sauce, with the basil and parsley which Kouryou-chan picked out of the garden.

After I cleaned the kitchen and Omaha put Kouryou-chan to bed, reading to her from a full-sized Wind in the Willows, I played some more BloodRayne. I'm in a very big boss level, which is more interesting than most boss levels, but the first time through one of the three daemons wasn't there and I couldn't complete; the second time I died; the third time I killed all three bosses only to have the game crash on me while I wandered around trying to figure out the puzzle. I set up a couple of downloads and headed to bed instead.
