NPR: Stupid or idiotic?

So, the story is out. National Public Radio has decided that the host of Morning Edition, the man who for 25 years has told us what day it is and eased us into our morning routine, informed us of tragedy and triumph as we showered and rode into work, is too old.

Bob Edwards is not a VJ. I had no idea how old he is, nor do I care. The man is and has been an institution, and for NPR to decide they need to go "in a new direction," and to seek "a more diverse audience," but to ditch Bob is about as smart as trying to do trepanation with an in-the-shell egg scrambler. This is a bit like ditching Walter Cronkite in favor of that plastic-faced moron from MSNBC.

What's next? Nina Totenberg told to start referring to the Supreme Court Justices as "The Supreme Dudes?" Alex Chadwick will switch his show from National Geographic Radio Expeditions to High Times? Ira Flatow to expound on the virtues of Intelligent Design?

In case anyone wants to get serious, here is the text of Georgia's HB 1477.

(1) Such person circumcises, excises, or infibulates, in whole or in part, the labia majora, labia minora, or clitoris of a female;

(2) Such person is a parent, guardian, or has immediate custody or control of a female child under 18 years of age and causes or permits the circumcision, excision, or infibulation, in whole or in part, of the labia majora, labia minora, or clitoris of the child; or

(3) Such person removes or causes or permits removal of a female child under 18 years of age from this state, for the purpose of circumcising, excising, or infibulating, in whole or in part, the labia majora, labia minora, or clitoris of the child.

I think fallenpegasus is right. It never occurred to the sponsors that an adult would want such a thing done to him or herself. When told that some might, one said he'd never heard of it but "I don't think that's something people ought to be doing to themselves."
