Weekend stuff

Which Agent Smith are you?
The weekend was good. Omaha had a garage sale to dispose of the children's clothes that no longer fit the children, which sadly didn't do nearly as much business as she'd hoped. She had so many excellent signs pointing in to the Spiral (as we call the road leading to our house: from the main road from I-5, it's five first lefts and you're there). Most of the "pro" folks told her that it was too soon after Memorial Day and that June would be much better.
Made waffles for the family for breakfast. Good ones, too, whipped the egg whites to make them fluffy and skipped the extra fat. By watching the iron closely I avoided burning them even without it. Very yummy, but I should remember to put blueberries into them for the kids. Then we sent the kids out to play while Omaha sold and I fiddled with my computer. After many struggles, I got the CD ROM burner in and working and wrote out my RedHat 9 CDs so I can get that 2.1 GB of images off the archive drive. I also got the joystick working, which required that I run down to RePC to buy a three dollar dongle for the motherboard. Nuisance. But I also pulled a joystick out of their scrap bin to try on the USB port-- it worked, which tells me I wired it up correctly and it's not going to fry either my art board or my Palm when I try using the USB ports on those.
Annoyingly, the motherboard finds the controllers on the CDR/W card first before looking to itself. This doesn't confuse windows, but to get Linux to recognize them I had to pop the card out, rebuild the kernel to recognize the "ide-reverse" keyword, configure the boot process with said keywoard, and reboot. It worked. Way cool.
I also got FreeSpace2 to compile on my Linux box, which means I can now play it without having to boot into Windows. Yay! Now I need to get the joysticks working under Linux, so I can play Defender and Gauntlet and all those old video games I have. Haven't tried to build Descent 2 yet.
Toward the evening, the kids had exhausted their patience with each other so Omaha and I took over, giving them a video, playing with them individual to keep them apart. They were actually quite good about going to bed on time.
Sunday, it was Yamaarashi-chan's birthday, so we took her for her favorite breakfast, doughnuts, then wandered over to Bullwinkle's for a birthday celebration. She had a blast with the bumper boats (they're armed with squirt guns... evil!). She got lost in the Maze, which, I'm convinced, is one of the more brilliant kid's attractions ever: it's big enough that kids can stay in there for hours, has enough "suprises" in the game card they give you (find the nine animal picturs hidden in the maze), but there's enough space between the walls of the maze and the floor that the kids feel confident that if they have to they can always get out... which means the parents can sit on the benches outside and just wait for them to get tired. We even played miniature golf, which she seemed to finally "get" around the last nine holes-- her score was much lower than for the first nine.
Even that, though, was exhausting. When Omaha and I got home, we were dead on our feet, but I still had to take Yamaarashi-chan to her mother's house. We ate leftovers (Mmm... Chinese food leftovers) and vegetated. Kouryou-chan ended up needing another bath as she managed to get peanut butter and jelly in her hair, but she was a good sort about it and let me wash her hair without complaint.
