Well, of course: 61.93294% - Extreme Geek. The Geek Test.

Work this week has vacillated from unproductive to hyperproductive: in two days I completely revamped two weeks worth of work, but Monday and yesterday I spent most of my time in uncountable meetings or working on trivial matters. I'm hoping today to get some C work in to create a reliable, machine-readable version of the Samba status page out. That'll be fun; I only get C assignments sporadically.

The Friday Five

What brand of toothpaste do you use? Toms of Maine Baking Powder and Flouride

What brand of toilet paper do you prefer? Scott's.

What brand of shoes do you wear? Some inexpensive brand from Target.

What brand of soda do you drink? Coke or Pepsi, doesn't matter much to me. I have a soft spot for Thomas Kemper's Vanilla, though.

What brand of gum do you chew? I don't chew gum.

Bah! Humbug! I am not "grumpy". Someone tell me this is a parody. On the one hand, the "Lambuel" panties and the Hunt The Dinosaur pages are completely ridiculous. On the other, I know some people who would be perfectly happy to wear "Reclaim the Rainbow" clothing, own an "Irreducibly Complex" mousepad, "Abstinence" underwear, or a "Team Bible" jersey.

But maybe I should get a Professor Giraffenstein Stein.

This new computer thing isn't working out. I got the old one sufficiently gutted that I can rebuild it as a router, which means that I'm back on the network (aren't you all happy for me)? I've been down for two days, just came back up yesteday morning. But so far I've been able to determine only that the 8GB that was my old Linux root does, in fact, have bad blocks and is sinking fast, and the 3GB that was waiting in the closet was just as south. I have two drives left-- one of which is my Linux root drive and the other is the archive, and I am not willing to blow either of those away. It's been a week since Omaha bought it for me, and I'm sure it's lovely, but what a pain in the neck it's been to get... nowhere.

I hope I can get it running this weekend. It would be nice to actually have a chance to get all of the drives in and running and actually play a game or two, which is why Omaha bought the damn thing for me in the first place.

I have discovered that the drive bays are uncomfortably close to the IDE pins and the AGP slot, making it impossible to move drives in and out without struggle. At least, when using ribbon cables. What do people recommend as good cables for IDE? Do the new rounded cables sold in gamerz stores justify spending seven bucks instead of the usual four?

They are a bit more flexible. You can instead, though, just cut up a normal IDE cable with a razor blade. Just slide between the wires. Leave pairs together if you're using 80-conductor cables (as you should be) so as to reduce crosstalk. (that's what the other conductors are for, after all)

Then either wrap the whole thing in some sort of cable wrap (like spiral wrap), or use zip ties, wire ties, twine.. whatever you feel comfortable with. Voila, one much more flexible IDE cable.

Also, the cheapo standard cables, even cheapo 80conductor cables, tend to be low quality. You do, mostly, get what you pay for.

Someone tell me this is a parody.

Wak! I needed a laugh, and they just kept coming as I read through the pages.

OK, it's a parody

Following links around got me to a link promoting a ministry to "preach to the heathen Mormons in Utah".

Thanks! I needed that laugh today...

The one potential catch with the round IDE cables is if you're using old hardware. They come with one hole blanked off to ensure the connector is the right way around, with a missing pin on the motherboard connector to match. It may be a feature of the improved IDE standards of the last few years.

As for the DIY round cable, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. I have better things to do with my time. I have considered making up a ribbon cable, where a short one would have been easier to use. but there's enough that could go wrong with that hack that I wouldn't try it.

Incidentally, I find the cheap hard drive coolers tend to fail with monotonous, and noisy, regularity, but some sort of cooling rig for the hard drives could make a difference to how long the hardware lasts.
