Yes, SakuraCon was pretty sad this year but part of the reason for that was the five-year-old I had in tow. It's hard to attend anything even vaguely mature with Yamaarashi-chan about. She's disturbingly drawn to anything graphically violent or especially gory, so keeping her away from that kind of material is a number one task in my book when we're at media venues like SakuraCon. It's a pity, too, because I really wanted to hang out and see what was what. She was very bored most of the time. Didn't even get particularly stimulated at the prospect of Totoro toys and things.

It's odd, too, because while there were a million things there, I didn't feel stimulated much by any of them. Anime has become simply an industry to me, and it's hard to get excited by "an industry" the way I do about an individual artist, a vision, a presentation. I love Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost In The Shell and Princess Mononoke, but I also like Casablanca, Apocalypse Now, and The Little Princess, but I'm not about to go nuts collecting every movie that's ever come out of Hollywood, either.

I guess if I was single and didn't have to worry about the kids, I could have watched the movies (they had Chobits playing when I was there; I saw a snippet long enough to know I didn't like the male lead's voiceover) and flirted with the boys and girls (and there were quite a few, some in the most charming cosplay too). I could have gone to the dance.

Ah, well. The joys of responsibility. Instead, after going to the "Parent's Guide to Anime" panel, we headed out, went first to the video store where we rented Kimba The White Lion, episodes 17-20 and Wonderworld now has several episodes of Red Dwarf for rent, too. Omaha will be so pleased.

An odd question about flirting

"flirted with the boys and girls"

Previously you siad that you don't recognise when people are flirting with you, but this seems to
run contradictory to this?
