The flying wing was experimental. The details that were learned went into making the B2 bomber. The reason it and the jet powered version weren't pursued in the 50s was because it is intrinsically unstable. No pilot could reliably fly the thing because there were so many things to control. Only the advent of Fly By Wire computer systems (made possible by using an Apollo AGM in a test airplane) made a flying wing capable of actually flying.

We do cool stuff today too. Consider the hypersonic missile tests. Today, a weapon. Tomorrow, the promise of actual super/hypersonic passenger planes without the worry about sonic booms -- no sonic booms from 80,000 feet.
