Well, after 570KVI, our second conservative radio station, went under, changing to an all-oldies format, I thought that would be the end of that station.
But no, like a phoenix rising from the flames (admittedly, a mangy phoenix covered in suppurating wounds and feeding the flames with its own noxious methane emissions), we now have Freedom 1590, a station so low-powered it barely qualifies as community radio. Not everyone on AM 570 carried over; Locals Kirby Wilbur and Brian Suits are gone. In fact, there are no locals on 1590. Laura Ingrahm has moved to 770 KTTH ("The Truth!"). Mike Gallagher is back, and 1590 goes even more hard-right with the addition of the intellectually deliquescent Dennis Prager and morally rancid Hugh Hewitt.
How right-wing is AM 1590? Their equal employment opportunity scoresheet, apparently required by FCC rules to be publicly available, is hosted by Townhall.com.
Joy, just what we needed. An audio outlet for Clownhall's nonstop cognitive diarrhea.

Date: 2010-12-27 04:49 pm (UTC)Aha. Follow the money. whois(freedom1590.com) shows the owner as Salem Communications, the parent company of townhall.com. Salem is unusual in the market in that it is a for-profit corporation, and usually specializes in high-powered stations. Oh, goody. And jeez those are some pricey digs, 6th and Blanchard behind the Ramada. 'course, given that there's no local talent it's probably barely big enough for an engineer to swing a cat. (Rumor has it that Michael Medved may move as soon as his contract with KTTH runs out... may...)
The stick is over on Bainbridge, pointed at Seattle... it's a cheap-ass location but it takes advantage of being right on the water, making best use of 5kw... it might even reach to Bellevue. :)
(Not that Bellevue is as advantageous a market as it used to be!)
(OTOH, it might be that they've actually got more of a market in Kitsap,
Ah, well. No sense trying to bury them; they'll just go underground and try to undermine our foundations. Best to have'em where we can see'em and keep an eye on'em.

But really, I'm just enjoying it for the now.
