What Wikimedia does is very different from what I'm describing. You still have to log in to each individual Wikimedia domain; it is from there that each domain server checks with the central server, via a back-end process, that the username and password are valid, and then the local server uses the received information as local store.

What I'm describing is a process whereby, once you've logged into the key domain, you don't ever have to present your authentication tokens to any other domain in the system; the key domain token is sufficient, and replicates automatically.
