The readers of Ellora's Cave, Loose Id, and Samhain all hand over their credit card information in order to read those companies various smut erotica "adult romance" offerings.

What is the likelihood that people would feel comfortable using their Google ID, Facebook Connect, or Twitter Auth accounts to activate subscriber services on a free erotica site? Would you be willing to do it?

Unlikely. People assume that financial transactions are secure and inviolate. People have less trust in the privacy of mere account id's, and I predict will be afraid that the other sitte would somehow start advertising their other info.

I think twitter, facebook and google *particularly* would concern people, frankly, because they're already concerned about privacy wrt each of these.

Why?

There is already a standard for such things that LJ helped develop - OpenID - but at the same time I'm not real sure I'd want to help anybody connect the dots. Google in particular centralizes quite a bit of personal information alreddie, which is why I don't use it for any permanent content... Facebook, ditto, including (a rather useless) insistence on real name...

Nope. A good erotica site would have its own authentication scheme (yes, Yet Another Password, but c'est la guerre) and encourage such things as TOR...

And any log over 24 hours old automagically gets shredded.

I have to agree with the previous two respondents. I for one wouldn't have any problem using an email account to sign in, but it would have to be a spam trap account because I'd half expect it to end up on a list somewhere. Whether through the actual site selling it, or through a free site not putting sufficient protection in place to prevent someone one else from harvesting the data, I wouldn't fully trust it. Of course, I'm not one of those who is willing to hand over information to the pay sites you mentioned either.

I'm also automatically wary of free sites that offer "subscriber services" that are also free but you have to supply personal information to get access to.

1) Average value on a bell curve is low. Most people are a little nervous about giving out info like that for free since there's no financial agreement there must not any obligation on the other side - and that you MUST be using it for some underhanded purpose.

Connecting to FaceBook and Twitter also allow one to "connect the dots" and like that I.D. to the rest of your identity - or vice versa; If someone researches your Facebook will they find out you like ZombieRobotFerret porn?


2) No, but that's normally because the free ones are worth what you pay for them. (Present company excepted.) It's like hitting the "Random story button (http://www1.asstr.org/cgi-bin/prandom.pl)" on ASSRT (http://www.asstr.org/). It's pretty scary sometimes.

Assuming all of your potential audience has any of the above. I personally have no use or desire for such things, and aside from a few bloggs I check mostly for specific purposes I'm not a fan of social networking. My IM client is my social network, combined with my phone and the real world.

I'd also say OpenID is the better than using some app specific log-on.

I also wouldn't have any problem using my OPenId for such a site.

I actually don't care if people know I like porn, or anything else I like.

Except that unless something has changed, OpenID is a very bad idea. It trains people to be vulnerable to phishing, because the only way they can know that they're entering their login and password into their providers page is to note if they are using an https connection. People don't pay attention to that, so it trains them to follow links from random pages and enter their credentials into the boxes they see.

I know of exactly one provider who avoids this (by using client certificates for authentication).

When hell freezes over. That's like a porn site requiring my credit card for a "free" preview. They will totally have something in their terms of service that says that you're signing up for service unless you cancel or something.

I'd use my OpenID for something like Stories Online, but I wouldn't use any of the others: I won't tie an identity to something I don't have more control over than I've got for any of those.
