A fire near my home...
Aug. 28th, 2009 12:36 pmThe other day as Omaha and I were heading out around 6:00pm, we got onto the small feeder freeway that leads into town. Right past the on-ramp, two fire trucks had just pulled up to a modest grass-fire.
I say "modest" because it was no more than fifty yards wide and maybe thirty high, along a slope leading up to the airport's westernmost runway. But it was all on fire, red and yellow and angry and quite dramatic.
When we returned an hour later, it was just a black patch. Crews were still tossing dirt on the last smouldering bits of ground, and otherwise the crisis was over. Probably a cigarette. All I can say is that I'm glad we had fire crews ready to deal with it, and I'm glad the wind was blowing away from my house that day.
