Like how the 1950s are generally held as being some halcyon age where nothing bad happened (especially civil rights riots), in spite of the fact that it also happened to be when the police were the most corrupted by organized crime.

Republicans seem especially good at that kind of doublethink, and this sort of thing raises a red flag about their brand of fascism.
