Sigh. I did the math. I sent out 27 resumes, got exactly three calls, one interview, and no bites in April. This doesn't count the in-face meetings and arrangements and so forth. I'm starting to get depressed.

I did a brief consulting gig, not for pay but just as a favor for a friend. The site I reviewed for them was pretty cool. Once they go live, I might use them for the next few brochure sites. (OTOH, since I have my own server, I'd rather base their code myself, but they're selling a service, not a product.)

It is tough. I've been through the cycle a few times since 2001 and it never seems to get any easier. Logically I know that jobs are scarce and that company have the pic for who they want to hire. They would be insane not to grab the absolutely best qualified for the job and I know that isn't always going to be me.

But after a while your self esteem takes a serious hit and that seem to be the hardest fight of all.

The best advice I can give is to try to remember to mix a little bit of fun and pleasure among the job searching and frustration. It may seem like slacking, especially near the first, but when you're mostly spinning your wheels it is time to step back and enjoy a few of the benefits (like going with your kids on school field trips).

Good luck, and chin up. I know its hard but it will happen in the end. And try to remember, there isn't anything wrong with you. You are skilled and talented. There just isn't much out there at the moment.

At about one resume a day, I've had all of 2 interviews and 3 callbacks, all between september and october.

Not so much as a peep since then.

Hugs. Been there. From what I can see in my industry, things --are-- starting to turn around again. New governmental fiscal years always help.

The more experience you have and the higher the level of job that you're looking for, the longer it takes to find a new one. It's one of the pitfalls of being a mature, highly skilled professional. I know it's not much consolation to hear that, though, and I'm sure that something good will come along for you.

It's murder for everyone. One of the better engineers I know is having trouble finding a spot right now. He's looking for small contracts right now himself, as well as working on an iphone app.

I'm budgeting 6 months for looking for work when my contract runs out. (It's currently being renewed every 3 months, dependent on the whims of finance. Just getting this far took a VP's signature.) Everyone's fighting for revenues right now. I'm looking to try a low-expense for-profit project just so that I can show that I was doing something.

A good friend filed that volume of resumes for several months without so much as a call-back.

She recently landed a job that is a nominal upgrade (albeit with a long commute) compared to the one that was cut.

Another friend just got a call-back from a company she was second-in-line for another job for. They have another position and invited her to apply.

I think things ARE getting better, but expect it to take several months and involve a lot of effort. Sorry. :/ It is NOT you. You know that, but hearing it again can't hurt.

Dude, I wish I had half your hits! Wanna run my math? ;p

BTW - there are rumors that WA will increase the unemployment payouts and/or extend benefit durations since they got their requested portion of the "stimulus package". I e-mailed unemployment to see what the real details were. Whatever it is though, there will be some increase to benefits in some way.

Hang in there.
