Not ten minutes after I make that post, my news feed tells me that Obama said this to a reporter:

It's my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. It's going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once.

I've said this in a couple of other places as well, but of Lincoln could run his re-election in the middle of the Civil War, if FDR could run for an unprecedented fourth term in the middle of WWII, then damned if McCain shouldn't be able to handle two things at once.

In 40 days we will know who will be responsible for the mess that George W. Bush has spent the past nearly 8 years putting us into.

If Bush starts a war in Iran, who will be responsible for dealing with it? Bush? No, Obama or McCain.

If Bush signs this stupid economic plan that Paulson wants, who will be responsible for dealing with the crisis from it? Bush? No, Obama or McCain.

If Bush does something else incredibly stupid, who will be responsible for cleaning up his mess? Bush? No, Obama or McCain.

And in 40 days, we'll know which of them it will be.

On January 20, 2009, the person who will have to take action for all of the messes that Bush got us into over the past 8 years will be legally allowed to do so.

In forty days, we will know who the person responsible for that action is.

When one's favored politician makes an otherwise cogent statement that contains an obvious and embarrassing error, it may be more tactically sound to direct one's readers' attention to a different statement that is equally cogent but does not contain such an error.

You know exactly what I'm saying... I'm saying that stating that after election day one candidate or the other will *be* responsible is a gaff on Obama's part.

However, I don't put a lot of credit in gaffs, because they happen on both sides (and mostly whenever Biden opens his mouth) but that's *all* that I was saying.

But to answer your question, no... with over 1400 lawyers working for the two campaigns (approximately 9K on Obama's side and 5K on McCain's), unless there is a clear victory in every major state, we will NOT know on election day who the responsible person (AFTER inauguration on January 20) will be.

It took 32 days for that to be settled after election day in 2000, remember?
