Neither one of the candidates are being rational about taxes. Both of them are talking about how they'll cut taxes -- albeit in different ways -- and they're both talking about all the money they intend to throw at particular goals, like alternative energy... but neither of them is saying a word about where the tax cuts and new spending is going to be taken out of the existing budget expenditures. So they have the choice of blowing off their campaign promises, taking the country deeper into debt, making significant cuts in existing programs, or raising taxes. None of which are particularly conducive to their electability if they actually admitted them.
