Omaha and I went to the park where Kouryou-chan's school has their annual "let's meet everybody" potluck picnic. The potluck was fortunately not too Seattle, people brought chicken and pizza, so I wasn't starving to death. I met Kouryou-chan's teachers for this year, more or less the same folks as last year, and got to observe upclose the faultlines in Kouryou-chan's social circle, which seems to be falling out between those who love to go outside and kick the ball around (Kouryou-chan), and those who want to stay inside and practice more girly pursuits-- the latter of which includes her best friend. Still, she seems to get along with an awful lot of kids there, which I count as a good thing. Even her teacher wants to know what happened to her over the summer, as "her poise and restraint are remarkable."

Unfortunately, as we were planing to leave, I snabbled a brownie off the table. I say "unfortunately" because the brownie turned out to be little more than a hunk of butter softened and blended with sugar and cocoa. I've been nauseous since we left.

Poke

Ooooh. Too much dairy just before bed. Soo not good for acid reflux and other digestive problems. Hope you're feeling better today!

Not living in Seattle (or, for that matter, having been their either) I don't really understand. Could you elaborate a bit?

Seattle potlucks are notoriously orthorexic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orthorexia_nervosa). As one writer put it in our local alternative weekly recently, "If I bring carbs or fat, people look at me like I'm a rapist." That's not true of every potluck, of course, but I've been to many where that's the case.

How does that reconcile with your comment about the brownie?

I think I know what you mean, though (I'm in Port Townsend. Potlucks are possibly even more extreme here), but still, it seems to be the effect of hearing comments like that that makes it so "oh now! can't have peanuts! Or meat! Or carbs! or butter in the brownies..." and the FBI's recent attempts to infiltrate vegan potlucks does make things even more complicated).

I meant... ...comments like what you said about the brownie are what makes people try and please everyone with their potluck contributions.
