I'm about to say something that would make my twenty-year-old self sneer and call me old and out of touch. I recently went back through my CD collection and ripped one particular band's whole oeuvre. I don't have about every other album, and I've come to one conclusion:

Tangerine Dream wasn't really all that good.

Advancing technology gave them vistas undreamed-of when they first sat behind their Moogs in the 1970s, yet they remained the same staid, boring producers of vapidity they were when they had only three channels, a million patchcords, and an analog mixtable.

Even Vangelis evolved more eclectically and more rapidly than Tangerine Dream.

When you realize you never want your daughters to talk to boys like your twenty-year-old self, then my son you will truely be old and out of touch!

Actually, my 20-year-old self was a pretty good guy. My 25-year-old self was a jackass.

I have Lily on the Beach on my iPod, and it's really the only album of theirs that I ever liked well enough to keep. Or maybe it's that there are a handful of songs on that album which I associate strongly with some pretty powerful memories...

(I think I first chatted with you when you were about 25, and you seemed pretty cool and un-ass-like to me, but then, I was a sheltered, naive little thing, just discovering the wide-open-world that was the alt.sex heirarchy in the early 90s, so... ;) )

Ah, the halcyon days of youth.

I wouldn't have had the first clue what to say to 20 year old Elfdaughters when I was myself 20.

Well, thank you for saying so. I just remember being insufferably egoistic at that point; the Internet was small enough that I could still pretend to be a big fish in a small pond.

Not 25, my dear. 28 to 31. That's when you reached the culmination of ass-hattery. ;)

This made me giggle so hard it burned. *grin* There have certainly been better and worse Elf years.

My favorite thing to remember, honestly, is when you were um, about 23, and announced that you had explored every possible nuance of sex there way, and that you had officially grown jaded and weary and reached the end of the Inter(sex)nets. I may even have a printed copy of that post somewhere.

HERETIC!

SEIZE HIM!

;)

I still like their stuff, and I've got a soft spot for their album Luminous Visions, as Marc bought me the video and album for my birthday lo many years ago. Then again, I know they have like a hundred albums, and as I don't have most of them, I can't say if what I have is the best. From googling around, it's not a bad sampling, but there's probably an album or two I should get to compare.

You have any favorites of theirs you still like enough to recommend? ;)

I only have 2 TD albums, Lily on the Beach, and a movie soundtrack.

I bought the album after the soundtrack hoping for a similar sound, but it never quite made it to that level. While Ive heard a lot of negatives online about it, am I the only one that actually LIKES the 'LEGEND' soundtrack?

I'm going to stand by Zeit, Rubycon, and Phaedra, particularly Phaedra. Much of the rest of their work was trash, though.

For ambient electronic music, have you ever heard Radio Massacre International? They're British, contemporary, and quite excellent.

Heee! I still have a bootlegged tape copy of the Legend soundtrack. I loved it. It's a bit overdone for me these days, but I still like it.

Spyro Gyra ... even worse. Much worse.

Still have that Jean Michel Jarre? I wonder how it has faired the years.
